SWEDISH GRIPEN

IN THE FRONTLINE FOR 30 YEARS TO COME

Today, the Swedish Air Force (SwAF) is operating 98 Gripens at three fighter wings – the Skaraborg Air Force Wing, F7 Såtenäs, located in Såtenäs outside Lidköping, Blekinge Air Force Wing, F17 Kallinge, located at Kallinge in Ronneby and Norrbotten Air Force Wing, F21 Luleå, located at Kallax in Luleå.

The Air Force Wings F17 in the south and F21 in the north of Sweden are the two wings that are currently working operational squadrons. The F7 Såtenäs wing is the SwAF’s main centre for the Gripen system and for the basic training of the Gripen pilots. In fact, all Gripen pilots, Swedish as well as foreign operators, begin their training here.

The Air Combat Training School, LSS in Uppsala – the principal centre of excellence for the development and training of the Swedish Air Force – are also using Gripen fighters for the training of pilots, operators and aircrews.

International exercises

International exercises are a vital part of the Swedish Air Force’s operations and are a requisite for its ability to participate in international missions with other countries. Two important exercises during recent years were the Red Flag exercise at Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada, USA and the Loyal Arrow, a NATO-led exercise executed from the SwAF F21 Wing at Kallax in Luleå, Sweden.

Red Flag 2008

Red Flag aerial combat training exercise is the largest of its kind in the world. Over a two-week period in late July, parts of the Swedish Air Force took part in the 2008 exercise at Nellis Air Force Base, in Nevada, USA. The Swedish group comprised seven Gripen aircraft and 93 personnel. The Swedish unit flew a total of 65 sorties and dropped six bombs, two of which were live. The pilots fired around 900 automatic cannon shots and deployed 1,000 anti heat-seeking missile flares. The exercise showed that Gripen is capable of meeting the toughest of challenges and demonstrated that the Swedish Air Force is fully prepared for international missions.

Loyal Arrow 2009

In June 2009, ten NATO and non-NATO nations and around 50 fast jets participated in the live firing exercise Loyal Arrow 09. The exercise took place at Norrbotten Wing, F21 Luleå, in the north of Sweden. The purpose of the exercise was to allow units and selected parts of the NATO Response Force Joint Force Air Component Headquarters to train coordination and conduct in air operations. AWACS and transport aircraft as well as helicopters participated in the exercise. SwAF joined the exercise with 4 Gripen fighters. During the ten-day exercise, Gripen carried out all planned flights, a total of 78 offensive and defensive missions. Loyal Arrow provided a unique opportunity for the SwAF unit to prepare for future international operations.
